First up: Arrested Development. It's official. It's happening. It's returning! It will air on Netflix after the streaming and video rental company had a bidding war with Showtime. Again, it will air ten episodes of a new season, leading to a movie.
2 Broke Girls will win me back with the return of Jennifer Coolidge to prime time television as the girls' neighbor.
Ricky Gervais will again host the Golden Globes. That will be three years in a row! The controversy (including not being invited back, especially to host) must be working in pulling in new audiences. I know I wasn't watching them before he hosted. It's probably having rating peaks. Unfortunately, this will be his final time, and you be sure with that in mind, he will crush the souls of the douchey Hollywood actors and awful movies that so deserve ridicule.
Cougar Town is not on ABC's mid-season schedule. It was originally supposed to return this month, then got pushed back to January, and now it's pushed back to the Spring. Luckily, it won't have competition. Not only that, but the season has been reduced to 15 episodes by ABC's order. Does anyone else hate ABC execs?
In related news, Community is benched to make room for Up All Night and the return of 30 Rock on Thursday night's schedule. (Unfortuantely they're still kepping the dwindling-in-audience Whitney.) Reps report that Community is NOT cancelled, and it will return in the Spring. NBC tends to have faith in their shows and show loyalty to fans, which may be part of why it was financially going downhill recently. But at least they don't cancel at the drop of a dime.
NBC will air Betty White's 90th dinner-style birthday bash. Her birthday is January 17, so expect it to be within the following two weeks. You can guarantee laughs from the likes of her co-stars of Hot in Cleveland, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and NBC's current funny ladies--which probably means Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler (which I actually typed Leslie Knope...woops!), and maybe even Christina Applegate. Hot in Cleveland will do an episode dedicated to Betty's birthday around that time. In other Betty news, her show about old folks playing pranks on young people, Off Their Rockers (BFFs), is missing from the NBC mid-season lineup. No word on when it will air.
Wendi McLendon-Covey will also lend her comedic chops to Hot in Cleveland. I miss Reno 911. The women made that show.
And finally...Megan Mullally, the most sought-after guest star (the Alison Krauss of TV world), will join Breaking In as a series regular in an effort to revive the canceled-and-returning sitcom on FOX. I've never watched, but you can bet I'll at least tune in for her. She will also guest star, hopefully in a recurring role, as a rival talk show host to Ava on Up All Night. She was also Ava's protege! D-R-A-M-A! Drama! I can't wait to see more of her from this season's incredibly hilarious Happy Endings.
