Awesome Movie Highlight: No. 9--Inglorious Basterds/Watchmen

Inglourious Basterds

Holy crap. I love me some Tarantino, and this is by far my favorite. Tarantino knows how to do everything: write flawless dialogue; build suspense and tension; create beautiful strong characters, especially women; great shots; and tell a damn good story. Refer to my previous blog on the movie.

“My name is Shosanna Dreyfus... and you've seen the face of Jewish vengeance.”

Watchmen

But since I've already raved about Inglourious Basterds I wanted to share one that came in close on the list: Watchmen. I'm not one to complain when a movie doesn't match up panel by panel with the graphic novel or word by word with the novel. They are different mediums. Why do you want to watch your comic book? It's a comic book for a reason. Are we trying to make the comic book die? There would be no point in it if every movie made from one copied it verbatim. That being said, Watchmen was genius. The music choices kicked ass, especially Dylan's "The Times They Are A' Changin'." The characters were perfectly cast in this noir superhero criticism. The ending was changed to fit the modern-day big screen better. With themes of utopia, heroism, sexuality, and so forth, Watchmen should have created a legacy that parallels with comic counterpart, but alas, many do not see film adaptations the way I do.

Site of the Week 9/21-9/27: Cover Lay Down

You guys! I'm crazy about this blog! Wanna know why? I'LL TELL YOU WHY! It's a blog that provides us mp3s and clips of folk covers of original songs from the pop, rap, blues, classic rock, and other genres. It gives backgrounds to versions of traditional songs, where some versions originated and when a shift changed. Reviews, rationales, and studies are provided. Tunes are often grouped in themes, like Dolly Parton or Sailing. Some of my favorites: First Aid Kit's version of Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song;" Brianna Lane's version of the Foo Fighters' "Learn to Fly;" Shawn Colvin's cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy;" Jonathan Coulton's countryish-boy-band-sounding cover of "Baby Got Back;" and anything by Richard Shindell.

The best part for you guys....you get to hear a lot of my favorite bands, like The Greencards and The Duhks! Many of my favorite Irish musicians make it on the list too, like Cara Dillon and her version of the Beatles' "Wait!"

Awesome Movie Highlight: No. 10--Evening

Over the course of the next few weeks, I'll post my top ten movies and reasons why they're in my top ten. Surprisingly there's a lot of dramas and Nicole Kidman. I tend to not enjoy either. So I'm shocked at my own choices sometimes.

Evening

Evening is based on Susan Minot’s same-titled novel of a woman on her death bed, confusing the present and the past. What’s real and what’s not? Wonderful acting, especially by the rarely-seen-on-screen Glenn Close. Everything about the movie makes me want to watch it again and again. On top of that, Claire Danes does her own singing! Cue swoon! Other stars include veteran Venessa Graves, the lovable Hugh Dancy, the multi-faceted Toni Collete, the man of men Patrick Wilson, the versatile acting goddess Meryl Streep, Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer, and recently departed daughter of Redgrave Natasha Richardson. You can’t go wrong with the most talented cast in Hollywood. It was totally underrated and misunderstood and flew under the radar and will continue to do so, making me utterly sad. Complexity, unfortunately is lost within the typical moviegoer’s…moviegoing.

Geek Chic: The James Joyce

TWEED!!!!! You guys, tweed is so in again. The seventies and eighties brought in the popularity of tweed jackets, but I've been seeing them again, as well as tweed vests and caps. I went to an Irish festival last weekend, and nearly every person had on a tweed cap, man and woman. I don't see them just at Irish festivals, but also in everyday circumstances. How fun! I love my tweed cap. You can wear them with anything, and in the winter, they look friggin sweet with a nice pea coat. The Irish look is natural and comfy, yet stylish. Irish designer Zoe Boomer said of what she likes and what trends seem to be in style in Ireland from what I've seen: "I love individual styles with personality not necessarily following the trends but looking stylish and well put together, in garments that suit their figure. I'm not a fan of too grungy or too perfect. I love when women look well dressed especially if they have natural hair and make-up. To me a natural finish makes them look more stylish and real." Fully agreed, Lady Boomer!

Also, as of this moment, I just got the softest blanket for my bed....EVER! you're welcome for that information...thanks, Máthair!

Summer Watching List: A Reflection

Well nerds, it's fall (or autumn, if you prefer) and that means summer time is over. The end of summer brings many things, including new episodes of our favorite shows (yay!). While this is good news, the good thing about the summer months and no new episodes (save summer series) is that it gives me the opportunity to watch shows I haven't had the time to watch. This summer I invested my time into two t.v. series: Weeds and Supernatural.

Catching up on a t.v. series such as these (both in their fifth season this year) can be taxing. For me, every free half hour or hour I could find was devoted to getting caught up to where the new episodes are. It's an enjoyable experience most of the time, until it gets to the point where it starts to feel like a job. But, if it's a good show like these you're happy to get up and go to work.

Although Weeds is a summer series I was able to watch seasons 1 through 4 in enough time to begin watching new episodes halfway through season 5. I adore this show and have come to realize that I will love any show with a group of dysfunctional characters.

Last week I finished season 4 of Supernatural and I am totally invested in the show now. I love the characters, but most importantly I love that I can sit back and watch the show without easily predicting what will happen next.

There are more shows on my list, but I'll be taking a break from it for a while. Up next are It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Damages and Bones.

Growl for me!

In honor of the premiere of Cougar Town tonight on ABC, I think it's appropriate to compile a list of a nerd's top ten cougars. What qualifies as a cougar? Old enough to be a teen's mother, I'd say. So I'll go with mid 40s.

10. Mary Steenburgen: From Woody Allen's Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy to Elf, Mary Steenburgen lights up a room with her flighty, sweet voice. I wish she'd cook spaghetti for me...

9. Jane Seymour: Seymour was by far the sexiest bond lady EVER. She looked good decked out in western garb, but I began to lose respect for her when she started doing roles and movies like Wedding Crashers. Less sexy, more slutty. But because of Dr. Quinn and previous experiences, she still tops my list...and have you seen her?!

8. Robin Wright Penn: Princess Buttercup. Classic. Queen of the Wealthow. And she can sing? I couldn't stop listening to her two songs on the Beowulf soundtrack for two weeks when I saw the movie a few months ago (I should've seen it sooner with Neil Gaiman scripting it).

7. Famke Janssen: All I have to say is "Jean. Grey. Bad. Ass." Another Bond lady and classy actress. If only she could read my mind...

6. Faith Hill: I know to most, she'd probably top this list, but remember this is Nerdy Pop...I do think she's classy and beautiful and has a great set of pipes. She's not afraid to speak her mind. I like that in a lady. And she's not afraid to be herself, which is probably why she doesn't have more a fan base in her music and just her looks.

5. Megan Mullally: The only character I liked on Will & Grace, and, therefore, the only reason I watched was Karen Walker, the squeaky, drunken, pill-popping riot! And now she'll be a single mom looking for love in obviously the wrong places. And look...look at those glasses! That's hot.

4. Courteney Cox: I usually considered Monica the Friend that was most like me...clean freak, crazy, etc. Unfortunately it turns out I'm more like Ross...disappointing to say the least. I loved, loved, loved her as bitchy Lucy Spiller on Dirt, and I can't wait to watch her tonight.

3. Michelle Yeoh: Wowzas! A woman who does her won stunts and wields a sword and every other hand-combat weapon. I'll watch any movie she's in. And she tore my heart into shreds in Sunshine. She's the only reason why I tolerated the Mummy III. She's oh so sexy. Her voice, her poise, her....well, her.

2. Amanda Tapping: I love you, Madame Tapping. You own science-fiction as far as I'm concerned! Though I haven't seen her in her previous work, I have heard of her dedication to Stargate, and I've seen her dedication to the thrilling and complex Sanctuary. And damn, can she rock a ladyhat like crazy. See first episode for classic broad ladyhat. I've only seen Chely Wright rock it like her in her video for "Jezebel."

1. Mary McDonnell: I feel like I don't need to say anything, but I do. Because...I owe that to her. She's sexy beyond all sexiness. Her fantastic acting makes her even sexier. When she delivers the lines in "Blood on the Scales," she made me shiver and tremble with excitement and all sorts of good feelings in my pants. But why on earth would she guest star on Grey's Anatomy?! That almost pegged her down a notch, but since they have good music on their show, I let it slide. She played the most badass lady president ever, and I wish Laura Roslin could be ours one day. I hope Roslin guest stars on Sanctuary this season! I might explode!

Honorable mention: Cate Blanchett, solely for being the classiest, most talented performer to grace the big screen since Dame Judy Dench and Meryl Streep. And she's beautiful.

Celtic Corner: Cara Dillon

I failed to mention that Cara Dillon's newest release came out in the U.S. last Tuesday. I failed to mention it because I already ordered it in the spring from the U.K. I'm that nerdy. Listen, every single time I suggest Cara Dillon to somebody, they end up loving her. Why? Listen and find out for yourself. Her voice captures the winding, lush, rustic land of old Ireland. Her cover of Tommy Sands' "There Were Roses" is what addicted me to her music. And to Tommy Sands. Her latest album Hill of Thieves falls back to more traditional sounds as she covers more traditional songs. The only self-penned tune is her title track, and it's my favorite. Every track is Irish to the core, even through the very last tune "Fil, Fil A Run O." In between are gems such as "The Parting Glass" and "P Stands For Paddy," where Dillon gets a rare chance to sing an upbeat tune. Doesn't happen often, but I don't mind one bit! Another highlight is "Spencer the Rover," guest starring her brother in-law and AMAZING talent Seth Lakeman on vocals and guitar. You guys, Cara Dillon will be your most favorite person EVER!

Curse Thee Thursday Night!

Thursday night has been the best night of TV for a while now with Monday now coming in close. But let me talk about the season premieres this Thursday.

We'll start with Parks and Recreation. Oh my stars and garters! This episode was by far the most hilarious yet. Besides, there's penguins! In marrying two penguins, which Leslie thought would be cute, Leslie is publicly shown to be a gay activist due to the now-married penguins being gay. While the gay community has taken her in as a hero, the rest of the community has shunned her. Being from Indiana, I can tell you that's pretty reflective of Indiana! Anyway, funniest episode of any of the shows Thursday!

The Office! Disappointing in hilarity, but good! Stanley! Come on! Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone. Michael begins to spread rumors about everyone in The Office when he tries to hide a rumor that is the truth and will end up hurting people. Jam was pretty funny at the beginning. And I love how Erin and Kelly are quickly becoming best friends, where Erin even starts to dress and act like her. Though I liked Erin being really shy and happy about everything, I think it'll be fun to have her be outgoing and happy about everything. Kevin's one line was hilarious, like he always is. But overall, not as funny as it could've been or should've been.

Community. I suppose they were just setting up the cast, but it was lacking in anything spectacular. I think its got interesting characters, and I think it will pick up in terms of good plot and writing. But we'll see soon.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Dee and Charlie are my favorite characters, so I always love their own storylines. Dee wanting to be a surrogate mother, Charlie wanting to duel a lawyer for making him look like an idiot when he was "lawyer speaking." Guest starring Melanie Lynskey as the wife who wants to have a baby.

Geek Chic: It's a Mad Men World

It is often said that I was born in the wrong era. When other kids my age were watching cartoons at age 4, 5 or 6 I was glued to I Love Lucy. I stayed up late to watch Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie and The Dick Van Dyke show on Nick at Nite. So, it's probably no surprise that I love anything and everything having to do with the 50s and 60s. Naturally, this includes Mad Men, and while the show is becoming more and more popular, so is its wardrobe.

Certain subtle trends in fashion this year, I think, can be traced back to the AMC original series. So many of the trends in dresses have been belted, pleated and looked so similar to Peggy Olson's day-to-day threads (except now in 2009 they're in Technicolor!) I can even see a subtle link to Mad Men in the shirt dress trend, as well as the more frequent use of plaid.

As far as men's fashion I've noticed that many men have started to ditch the sports jacket for the tailored vest when looking to dress to impress. Also, I just recently learned that Banana Republic has partnered with Mad Men to create a line of suits. ME-OW. This trend excites me a great deal, mainly because I like my men like I like my Draper: dapper.

New on DVD: Safety in...Monsters?

Season 1 of SyFy's Sanctuary was released on DVD yesterday, Tuesday, September 15. Amanda Tapping has tapped into brilliant sci-fi noir. The sci-fi genres loves the Canadians, and it seems the Canadians love it, as the majority of sci-fi shows star the Red Leafers or frequently guest star them. Sanctuary, BSG, and Stargate often share cast members. Sanctuary stars Amanda Tapping as an all-around scientific genius; Robin Dunne as a confused psychologist; Emilie Ullerup as a badass hunter/gatherer; and Ryan Robbins as a tormented computer-savvy werewolf. Werewolf? Yes. Sanctuary is about a very secretive organization that finds and protects...missing links, like bigfoots and other cyptozoologists's dreams come true. Though they may be misunderstood and, therefore, feared and hated (much like my beloved X-Men), they are the key to our future...but how? And Dr. Helen Magnus (Tapping) has many, many secrets and a long, long past that includes 150 years plus. Season 2 begins in a few weeks, October 9 (as far as I know). Great characters, intriguing and intricate plots, suspense, mystery, humor, fun, and glasses...mmm. Have a watch, you guys!

Nerdy Pop Watch

First of all: I can't stop listening to all of the Glee tunes from the show. I absolutely HATE some of the original versions, like the whiny Rhianna's "Take a Bow," but when the ladies of Glee Club performed it, I was thoroughly impressed. I sometimes listen to it three times in a row, but at least three times a day. "Push It" makes me laugh a little, but I still don't care for the song too much. I think it's better when watching it, since it's so awkward. And I still love Matthew Morrison's version of "Gold Digger," and I appreciate the incorporation of the songs into the storyline. Very nice! And tonight's episode.....AMAZING! I absolutely love it when Matt Morrison gets to sing, and I love when students get to have some of the spotlight, like Mercedes and Kurt. Mercedes' song was fun...and sexy.

As for comics...Moonstar is back full force! Prior to last week she was powerless, but now she has the power to kill gods as a valkyrie again (but more powerful)! The art in Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus portrayed her so brilliantly. Unfortunately the guest artist Mike Deodado can't tell a story with his art but like some others, he can make a mean singular panel.

Let me tell you....Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (MUA2) is AWESOME! There's so much in it, and Storm is even more badass than ever, as are Deadpool and Invisible Woman! I can't wait for Jean Grey! I didn't want to use Storm, but I didn't care for the other characters' moves. I'm more of a range attacker. Gameplay is much the same, but I don't care. It's a better game than the first, and more challenging.

UPDATE: Jean Grey is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our final team during Anti-Registration: Captain America, Deadpool, Storm, and Jean. Turns out pretty much every character is good, except for Venom.

2009 MTV VMA Thoughts and Reflections

One of my favorite award shows every year is the MTV Video Music Awards. You never know what to expect! However, this awards show has been less than stellar for me for quite some time. This year however, I was pleasantly surprised - the show wasn't so bad. Let me give you my thoughts:

Top Moment of the Night hands down - The opening Michael Jackson Tribute. No lie - I was moved to tears by Madonna's heartfelt tribute as well as the performance tribute featuring today's top choreographers and Ms. Jackson herself. Long live the King of Pop!

Taylor Swift wins best female! This is quite a surprise to me (and to Taylor as well, based on her reaction) due to the competition she was up against. Either way, she is such a talented girl with a great heart and very deserving. That said...let's breifly talk about Kanye West.

First of all, as a person, I've never had all that much respect for the man. Tonight, he has lost all of my respect as both a person AND an artist. NO artist deserves praise for their work if they can't even respect human beings in my opinion. I will no longer endorse Kanye West in any way, shape, or form other than acknowledging him as the most arrogant self-centered douche bag on the planet. Seriously...get over yourself, man. I've been reading how other Celebs have responded to the incident. Artists like Pink, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson have been very vocal in responding with their distaste for Mr. West. Pink even went as far as to approach him and give him a look to which security had to remover her from his vicinity! And Kelly Clarkson's Open letter to Kanye says it all - check it out:

Dear Kanye,

What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we’re all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like shit. I mean, I’ve seen you do some pretty shitty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, asshole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you. I like everyone. I even like my asshole ex that cheated on me over you…which is pretty odd since I don’t even personally know you. The best part of this evening is that you weren’t even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her…so why can’t you be?? I’m not even mad at you for being an asshole…I just pity you because you’re a sad human being.

On a side note, Beyonce has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!!

Taylor Swift, you outsell him ….that’s why he’s bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!

- KC -

Kanye later apologized via his blog. What a loser - man up, dude and apologize to her like a real man. Psh...

The awards themselves were pretty good. Beyonce wins best video and best choreography for "Single Ladies", Britney Spears wins best pop video, Green Day wins best rock video, Gaga wins best new artist, Eminem wins best Hip-Hop, and T.I. wins best male. I can't really argue with too many of those.

Performances were slightly lacking to me. Pink & Green Day stole the show particularly in my opinion. Gaga's performance was expected to blow us away, but was more overrated than anything...plus i just felt kinda creeped out with the blood. In general, it just seemed VERY unlikely that anyone could top the Michael Jackson tribute...the rest of the performances seemed almost amateur compared to the opening.

Video of the Year goes to Beyonce and like the class act she is, Miss B humbly forfeited her glory time to give Taylor Swift her moment. Props to you, B! A class act, indeed!

Alicia Keys and Jay-Z close the show! Very nice, very nice...Lil' Mama's cameo? Uncalled for...What is it with celebrities? Do they just feel like they can invade anyone's and steal their spot light!? Ugh.

Russell Brand as host? Eh...it was typical Russell brand.

It is highly likely I will watch the replay of these awards numerous times this week. Additional thoughts are likely to come.

Also - I am well-aware of Ellen being added as the new judge to Idol. I'm processing this and doing some research before I make my statement. Stay tuned!

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Seriously, you guys! I'm stoked: this Tuesday is HUGE! MUA2, It's Always Sunny in Phili, The IT Crowd, Sanctuary, and Big Bang Theory all come out in stores. Big money spending. But I can't wait to spend all my free time playing most anticipated game: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. 24 playable characters: Storm, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Gambit, Iceman, Ms Marvel, Captain America, Daredevil, Thing, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, Deadpool, Hulk, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Penance, Songbird, Thor, Venom, and best of all JEAN GREY!!!! Even though I'm an X-Men freak, as I'm sure you've figured out, I think there's a little too many X-Men in there, and I'm disappointed that there's not as many lesser known superheroes to vary the lineup from the last MUA. I want Young Avengers and New X-Men and more women. As I've said before, women are getting more prominent and powerful in the Marvel Universe. Why isn't there more than 5 in the game? We're getting essentially the same characters from X-Men Legends 2 and MUA1. Lame. But I'm still gonna play this game like crazy. I might have to rent it for Wii just to play as Psylocke, my second favorite X-Woman. I'm crazy excited for this game, especially with the fusions, where we get to see team-up action instead of see just the bonus points for powers used at the same time. A fastball special from Wolvie...can't wait! Rent it, buy it, whatever! Just play it and love it! EEEEEEEE!

It's Always Sunny on Thursdays

The best night of TV--Thursdays! It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is beginning to gain more attention, and it's about time! You guys! This show makes me laugh non-stop! I cry from laughing so hard, and usually I can’t even hear the next lines because of said hysteria. How can one show be so gosh darn funny? Because the brilliant minds behind it are sick and twisted individuals who probably live out their sick thoughts through their television alter egos. Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Charlie Day are certifiably insane, and this show is proof. But it’s genius in its low-browness. These guys get in a mess of things when they come up with ideas that will make them rich and famous. And every plan fails when they all try to cater to their own self-interests. With Kaitlin Olson (Sweet Dee) and Danny DeVito, the crew makes quite a ruckus, and it’s starting to be heard. Join the fun Thursday nights on FX after The Office!

Season 4 DVD arrives in stores this Tuesday, September 15, and the show picks up with season 5 on Thursday, September 17. Watch and laugh, but be warned, it may be hazardous to your health.

Defying Expectations

Defying Gravity is the new Lost. It's even on the same channel. Let's hope that it doesn't get ridiculous like Lost has. It has a mysterious presence that is controlling events and the characters' courses. A wonderful cast is only trumped by its stunning visuals. It stars Laura Harris of Dead Like Me and Ron Livingston of Office Space. Characters' pasts come to life as we progress through the show. I'm surprised at ABC's increasing television quality. I'm stoked about Courteney Cox's Cougar Town too! Rawr!

Defying Gravity airs on ABC Sunday nights. Watch it, you guys! Because it's already looking to not be renewed because, like many new summer shows, it gets ignored. The only shows EVER to be advertised are reality shows. And ABc tends to have a lot of those.

This is your brain on Tetris!

Tetris is my favorite video game hands down! I remember playing Tetris on my big gray brick original version of the Nintendo Gameboy system for hours when I was younger. I still am addicted to this game and others like it! It's almost therapeutic to line up the blocks and watch the lines disappear as the pace picks up faster and faster as time elapses - it never gets old. In general, I like videogames, but I suck at them. But this is one I feel I can certainly hold my own - and it's nice to see that such a great game has some positive results other than just being an awesome way to spend one's time! Nerd out, smile, and raise your glasses (drinks and/or eyewear) to the recent research that continues to support these positive results of playing this fantastic game!

Site of the Week 8/31-9/6: Dinosaur Comics

Dinosaur Comics, if you've never read, feeds the nerdgasms all over the world. Authored by Canadian Ryan North, Dinosaur Comics is comprised of the same panels day after day, which makes it funny in itself. The comic records the insane thoughts of T-Rex, an adorably sexy and sassy green dinosaur that often talks of possible futures and pasts. Appearing in the panels are Dromiceiomimus, T-Rex's female friend and possible ex-lover, and T-Rex's BFF Utahraptor, T-Rex's foil. Often God, Satan, and even Shakespeare (!!!!) appear as guest stars. You guys, read it and pee your underoos!

Dear Megan Fox,

So if Edward Cullen is the most over-rated actor in Hollywood right now (which he is in my opinion), I would suggest Megan Fox is the most over-rated actress. While she's got that whole "look at me, look at me" thing going for her (because she is attractive...let's be honest), she has yet to prove to me she's got the chops to truly make her mark in Hollywood as a solid actress. What's really tainted her in my book is her attitude. Everything I've seen her in (interviews, award shows, red carpets, etc.) she just seems so stuck up! Dear Megan Fox - Get over yourself.

In a recent article from Access Hollywood I read on Yahoo.com, Fox recently referred to Transformers 2 movie-director Michael Bay as "a nightmare to work for," likening him to dictating tyrants like Hitler or Napoleon. She claims that Bay "almost killed her" and her fellow Transformers co-star Shia LeBeouf by having them do "insane things that insurance would never let you do." Some would argue that Ms. Fox shouldn't bite the hand that feeds her since Bay played a role in putting Megan Fox on the map. Others would say maybe Director Bay is a bit of hard baller. My opinion? Bay knows how to make a sa-weeeeeet action packed blockbuster film - this we know. And...this just in: Transformers is a sa-weeeeet action packed blockbuster film, action being a movie genre that is typically known for scenes containing lots of stunts, special effects, explosions, and the like. Umm...yeah. Therefore, I imagine working for Michael Bay must be like doing physical therapy - you gotta work hard and at times it might hurt or seem crazy, but you do it anyway and benefit in the long run.

So to you, Megan Fox - if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen...or grow a pair. There are plenty of young hot hollywood starlets who could easily take your role in these blockbuster movies...even one of those girls from High School Musical or something.

Jump with Glee

I'm sure you've all heard about the summer's hit pilot Glee. It just re-aired last night with an added bonus: Matthew Morrison playing guitar and singing "Leaving on a Jetplane." Glee is about the ongoing faction within the high school caste system. The misfits vs the popular kids, with some stuck in the middle as the rope in a game of tug-of-war. It follows the Glee club in its efforts to save itself from being dropped from the school extracurriculars. It's also trying to save itself from the football team and cheerleaders, including the coaches, one of which is played by Jane Lynch. Plus it's got Jayma Mays, the adorable red-head that you might know as Charlie from Heroes. She's also a germophobe on the show, which makes for hilarious scenes. And it's so natural; she does her clean-freak stuff as the cast delivers their lines. The cast is brilliant, and their version of "Don't Stop Believin'" has everyone believing in this show, including many musical artists. Nearly every episode has a guest star, and artists readily agree to give the show permission to use their songs! It's first episode (not including the pilot) debuts next Wednesday at 9/8 central on FOX! We know how FOX loves to cancel stuff, but this show has gotten so much hype and support, I think it'll stick. Lucky for us!

Whitney Houston isn't having a Good Morning, America

One of the greatest vocalists of our time, Whitney Houston has certainly been on and off the radar for quite a while. Sadly, during that time, it seems as if her personal life issues (drugs, Bobby Brown, etc.) have overshadowed her amazing vocal talents. Set for a comeback with the release of her new single "I Look to You" and a new album, Whitney performed on Good Morning America yesterday. Unfortunately, this might be one of the more lackluster comeback performances I've seen... Whitney's vocals were quite strained, almost as if she had no voice, which she claims is due to a long-winded interview with Oprah that occurred prior to the performance - Oprah and long-winded? Imagine that...

Whitney's power vocals have created a really high expectation for her performances. People basically expect her to hit the powerful high notes that send chills up your spine every time she sings. Sadly, singers of this nature aren't allowed much room for error. In that respect, I feel for you, Whitney. In the clip of the performance, you will notice she has high energy and a bright smile, just not the strong, smooth, and silky vocals we're used to hearing from her. And with a live televised performance such as Good Morning America, one cannot really reschedule such an event. I commend you, Whitney, for giving it your all and doing the best that you could. No one can be expected to be on at 100% and give top-notch performances all the time and perhaps you simply just weren't having the best of mornings vocally. I mean, who can hit the high E above middle C at 8am? Seriously?

So what have learned? Well, even all-star performers have less than stellar performances sometimes...and when in doubt, blame Oprah.

Nerd Alert: Nerds Party Down with Megan Mullaly

Megan Mullally joins the cast of Starz's Party Down. YES! I'm so sad to see that Jane Lynch really is gone, though. It was the perfect cast before. I was glad that Jennifer Coolidge, her Christopher Guest co-star, stepped in while Lynch filmed Glee full-time. Now MILF Megan Mullally will join. She was hilarious in her failed sitcom "In the Motherhood," and she proved her funny bone in Will & Grace. I think she'll fit in well. Maybe she'll be singing a little bit too. I'm crossing my fingers for that! If you haven't seen this show, you'll love it! Adam Scott is funny because he's a normal person surrounded by uber-ridiculous idiots. One said idiot is Martin Starr (Bill from Freaks & Geeks), and he's back to being a full-fledged nerd. He's a struggling scriptwriter and highly regarded movie blogger. He doesn't like it when porn stars show interest in him but declare they are sci-fi nerds when they love dragons because dragons are from the fantasy realm. He hates dragons. AND it's got Lizzie Caplan. Mmmmm. Nerd candy. Seriously watch this show.

Sway the right way

Although I am a follower of popular music, sometimes I am not on the ball. This is probably because I listen to top 40 radio stations that claim to be "family-friendly" (they tend to not play the same songs 50 times a day). As a result, I often miss hearing hit singles that everyone else knows about.

As you might have guessed, the stations I listen to do not play songs by the musical group The Pussycat Dolls, so imagine my surprise when I learned today that the group covered the song "Sway" for a film back in 2004. The song was originally made popular by Dean Martin back in 1954.

This bit of information on its own is not upsetting to me. Artists record covers, it happens, especially with classic standard songs such as "Sway." What upsets me is the fact that today I discovered that apparently several newlyweds are using the Pussycat Dolls version as their first dance song.

Seriously? The Pussycat Dolls version? Okay, I know that not everyone is a fan of Dean Martin and might want a more modern sound for their first dance. And one could argue that the PCD version isn't SO different. The melody has not been compromised at all, but it still upsets me. What this says to me is that the couple wasn't aware of the song before the PCD recorded it. And that breaks my heart.

I still prefer Dean's version (or Michael Bublé's or Peter Cincotti's). But listen to the tracks below and decide for yourself.

Geek Chic: A Modern Proposal

H1N1 is attacking our schools. It’s another plague! With hand sanitizer in every room and around every corner of every hallway and encouraging students to use it every time they touch anything, sanitizer must be taking a toll on the school system budget--hand sanitizer that will eventually kill our immune systems making us more vulnerable to currently harmless diseases. A common cold will become the whooping cough, and chicken pox will become small pox. We will die. So in order to protect ourselves and our resources, the school board should order Hazmat suits for every student.

This would solve a multitude of problems. First and foremost, disease prevention. It would keep airborne viruses from spreading and fluid spreading. The Hazmats will prevent lip locking, or tongue twisting in some cases, in the hallway by making it harder to do so. There will be no reason to sanitize hands if no one can touch anything besides the inside of their own suit, acting similarly to a condom. This comparison may also lower teen pregnancy rates in teaching safe sex. Hazmats can be reused, with going through at least two bags of sanitizer per post a day, surely the cost of Hazmats will be less than a continuing supply of sanitizer.

I’d bet that Hazmats can be the next fashion trend, partly due to force. Decorate them by painting on them. Personalize, stylize, and accessorize your Hazmat. They can come in a variety of colors, and you can even make them unique to you. I’m going to do mine in green and paint the Irish flag on it. And maybe a small picture of Danny DeVito in his tighty whities. I know I needz to haz a Hazmat!

Help! My Mom's on Facebook!

The other day my sister and I went to dinner and she relayed this bit of information to me: Mom has a facebook. My sister then expressed her dilemma whether or not to accept our mother's friendship on the very popular social networking site. Honestly, I knew it would all come in time. It's kind of like when my mom began texting. I personally don't have a problem with my mom becoming tech-savvy mom - my mom and I are pretty cool. Now my dad joining social networking would be a different story...

Recent research shows that social networking logins are actually down from recent years, particularly among teens. Could this be because their parents (not to mention employers and school administrators) have invaded their technological space? Check out this relevant and comedic video from The Onion:

Idols on the Rise this Fall!

As a follower of pop culture, mainstream entertainment, AND reality television, American Idol simply can't not be on my radar! The program has become a staple of today's pop culture and has proven it can turn out some superstars. As the annual Idol summer tour begins winding down, eyes begin looking to the November releases of Idol winner Kris Allen, runner-up Adam Lambert, and also 4th place finisher Allison Iraheta. Rumor has it that Allen and Lambert will release on the same day, lining things up for yet another Idol showdown between the two! I know I'm on the edge of my seat! My take on these contenders shortly following the results of last season were this: Allen would sell records, Lambert would sell out arenas, and the Iraheta would be the most successful of them all. We'll see how that pans out, but for now here's some more indepth words on these upcoming Idol releases.

My opinion: Allen will make a great pop singer-songwriter record. He's been working with the likes of the Fray and Matt Kearney, which makes me feel pretty confident that his upcoming release will suit my tastes. Lambert is an outside-the-box performer who will take some risks and give us something new and fresh. Working with Linda Perry and RedOne among others, it should be a very high energy, high personality, and highly anticipated release! Iraheta is going more melodic rock, which suits her. Working with David Hodges and Kevin Rudolf - her release should also fit well in today's mainstream market.

Timing is everything for these Idols - with their 15 minutes over, now is the time for them to prove themselves as mainstream artists, not just reality TV has-beens. We'll see what happens this fall with their album releases and likely returns to perform on the Idol stage once again. With Paula Abdul removed from the judges panel, it surely won't be the same as they remember. Also, having auditioned for the show myself this past summer in Chicago, I took note of some possible Hollywood contenders that I hope to see on the show! We're in for another great season, folks. Get ready!

P.S. I heard on the radio yesterday that Danny Gokey (3rd place finisher this past season of Idol) is going country?! Not sure how I feel about this...

Mickey Mouse joins the Avengers!

Disney has bought Marvel for only 4 billion dollars! 4 billion! Marvel is a cash cow these days. With Marvel rides and characters all around Universal Studios Theme Park, I can see that. And I guess that's what they get for at temporarily keeping the entire Marvel staff. Hopefully they don't slowly fire them all and give a new line of comics. I think they want to expand from superhero comics to more of the literary graphic novels. I think it's a great idea! Marvel has been lacking in those, but definitely not great writers or critical depth. And then there's lines like X-Force and The Punisher, which is incredibly bloody and violent. Will it last? Will they demand that the creators take out a lot of the gore? If so, will it work anymore? You can't have a team of sharp objects and bullets without blood! I guarantee that at the free comic book day next year Spider-man and Goofy will have a team-up. "Garsh, Spidey!" Hopefully the animalistic cast won't touch our sweet, sweet comics.
