2009 MTV VMA Thoughts and Reflections

One of my favorite award shows every year is the MTV Video Music Awards. You never know what to expect! However, this awards show has been less than stellar for me for quite some time. This year however, I was pleasantly surprised - the show wasn't so bad. Let me give you my thoughts:

Top Moment of the Night hands down - The opening Michael Jackson Tribute. No lie - I was moved to tears by Madonna's heartfelt tribute as well as the performance tribute featuring today's top choreographers and Ms. Jackson herself. Long live the King of Pop!

Taylor Swift wins best female! This is quite a surprise to me (and to Taylor as well, based on her reaction) due to the competition she was up against. Either way, she is such a talented girl with a great heart and very deserving. That said...let's breifly talk about Kanye West.

First of all, as a person, I've never had all that much respect for the man. Tonight, he has lost all of my respect as both a person AND an artist. NO artist deserves praise for their work if they can't even respect human beings in my opinion. I will no longer endorse Kanye West in any way, shape, or form other than acknowledging him as the most arrogant self-centered douche bag on the planet. Seriously...get over yourself, man. I've been reading how other Celebs have responded to the incident. Artists like Pink, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson have been very vocal in responding with their distaste for Mr. West. Pink even went as far as to approach him and give him a look to which security had to remover her from his vicinity! And Kelly Clarkson's Open letter to Kanye says it all - check it out:

Dear Kanye,

What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we’re all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like shit. I mean, I’ve seen you do some pretty shitty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, asshole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you. I like everyone. I even like my asshole ex that cheated on me over you…which is pretty odd since I don’t even personally know you. The best part of this evening is that you weren’t even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her…so why can’t you be?? I’m not even mad at you for being an asshole…I just pity you because you’re a sad human being.

On a side note, Beyonce has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!!

Taylor Swift, you outsell him ….that’s why he’s bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!

Kanye later apologized via his blog. What a loser - man up, dude and apologize to her like a real man. Psh...

The awards themselves were pretty good. Beyonce wins best video and best choreography for "Single Ladies", Britney Spears wins best pop video, Green Day wins best rock video, Gaga wins best new artist, Eminem wins best Hip-Hop, and T.I. wins best male. I can't really argue with too many of those.

Performances were slightly lacking to me. Pink & Green Day stole the show particularly in my opinion. Gaga's performance was expected to blow us away, but was more overrated than anything...plus i just felt kinda creeped out with the blood. In general, it just seemed VERY unlikely that anyone could top the Michael Jackson tribute...the rest of the performances seemed almost amateur compared to the opening.

Video of the Year goes to Beyonce and like the class act she is, Miss B humbly forfeited her glory time to give Taylor Swift her moment. Props to you, B! A class act, indeed!

Alicia Keys and Jay-Z close the show! Very nice, very nice...Lil' Mama's cameo? Uncalled for...What is it with celebrities? Do they just feel like they can invade anyone's and steal their spot light!? Ugh.

Russell Brand as host? Eh...it was typical Russell brand.

It is highly likely I will watch the replay of these awards numerous times this week. Additional thoughts are likely to come.

Also - I am well-aware of Ellen being added as the new judge to Idol. I'm processing this and doing some research before I make my statement. Stay tuned!

  1. The real shame is that all everyone is talking about is the Kanye thing, not the MJ tribute. I'm afraid that a lot of people kind of even forgot that the tribute happened.

The Lady GaGa performance did creep me out, but she always creeps me out. I liked Beyonce's performance as well as Pink's. My cynical self is still trying to decide if Pink was actually singing live though.

I don't usually watch this award show, but did last night and was very much entertained. When it was over I felt like I was leaving party before everyone else. Kanye interruption aside, it was a good show.
